The Judea desert is well known for many things, such as being the lowest place on earth with a remarkable range in altitude rising to 3,346 ft at its highest point by Mount Hebron and descending to 1,312 ft below sea level by the Dead Sea.

The Judea desert is located between Jerusalem to the west and the Dead Sea to the east. The photo below was taken on the main road from Jerusalem to Jericho, next to the Dead Sea, where the sea level is indicated for travellers (this exact point is at sea level).

Apart from its geological significance, the Judea desert has historic importance  for Christians who know this desert as the place where Jesus Christ met John The Baptist for the first time next to the Jordan River, which is the reason for the existence of Christian monasteries that has dotted the desert landscape since the 4th century A.D. until the present day.
