The Small Bezalel Pedestrian Zone
A tour of the Nachlaot area gives us an opportunity to peek into a unique, colorful world where old and new intertwine asphalt and old stones; modern and old ;buildings; conservation with renovation art galleries and old water wells. The name Nachlaot stands for 32 old neighborhoods in the heart of Jerusalem, each one with its typical characteristics, which enable .the visitor to enjoy a special atmosphere.
The Nachlaot neighborhoods were built from 1875 on during the period when people started to build houses outside the Old City walls in areas such as Mishkenot Sha'ananim, Nachlat Shiva, Mahane Israel, etc. In addition to the old population new people came to live here and the mixture of religious and non-religious, students and new immigrants, together with the old residents, has created one of the most interesting combinations in Jerusalem - The small Bezalel pedestrian zone.
Walk up Bezalel Street and you’ll see an historic building that once hosted the renowned Bezalel School of Arts and Design. In the past few years the street has enjoyed a renewed prosperity: new boutiques are ,opening in its beautiful stone-built shops which give the visitor an opportunity to ,enjoy top Israeli designs in fashion, bags shoes, jewelry and more.
On Fridays from 9:00 AM until an hour before Shabbat, a colorful art fair is held on the street, with 150 booths, street exhibitions and live music. One can walk about and make purchases or just enjoy the atmosphere while .sitting in one of the picturesque cafes here.
