Bathhouses are a thing of the past, but 2,000 years ago they were highly regarded culturally, socially, and religiously

When we think of the people who lived during the time of Jesus, Second Temple Mount, and King Herod – we can look at archeological findings, remnants, Roman churches, and ancient structures to get an idea of how life functioned 2,000 year ago.

Under one of the building in the Jewish Quarter in the Old City, archaeologists discovered a 2,000 year old compound that is intact and that once used to belong to the High Jewish Priests (Cohen) that served the Temple.

In the photo, you can see that the bathhouse has intricate details and a beautiful mosaic next to it, indicating that this specific bathhouse served important members of the Jewish Community during the time of King Herod.

The bathhouse is part of the what is known as The Herodian Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem.
