The French consulate is located at the top of a hill to the west of the Old City, facing the walls and the Citadel of David

The construction of the French Consulate started in 1929 and was meant to fulfill two needs on behalf of France – first of all to remind of the role of France in Jerusalem at that time, and secondly to integrate the French consulate with the landscape of the Old City.

The French consulate was designed by architect Marcel Favier who skillfully combined modern simplicity with classic grandeur to give the building an image of a modern nation that is respectful to its traditions but also dedicated to the future.
