The Dung gate is located by the southern wall of the Old City and is in close proximity to the Temple Mount

Since the 2nd century, refuse has been hauled out of the city through this gate, hence the name.   There are many different theories that have been accounted for the naming of this gate.
One such theory goes back to 648 A.D. during Caliph Omar’s conquest of Jerusalem when the trash was cleared out of the city through this gate.

The gate is also known as the Gate of the Moors because of North African immigrants who lived in the neighborhoods next to the gate during the 16th century.
